SERVICES FOR THE DISABLED/HANDICAPPED
The library has a computer work station with assistive technology and ADA*-compatible furniture, which is located in a small study room on the second floor of the library. The key to the room (which is kept locked because of the expensive equipment) may be checked out at the circulation desk. The work station is equipped with a programmable mouse with a trackball. Assistive software installed on the computer includes Jaws for Windows (screen-reading software for the visually impaired), Magic (screen-magnification software), Kurzweil Screen Reader (software for the learning disabled), and Dragon Speaking Naturally (voice-translation software).
Instructional manuals and cassette tapes to assist in using the software are available next to the computer. A printer/scanner is also available. Barton students and members of the Wilson community who need assistive technology have first priority in using the computer.
This project is 80-percent supported with federal LSTA funds made possible through a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, administered by the State Library of North Carolina, a division of the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources.
