Although there are many ways of organizing books in a library, Hackney Library uses the Dewey Decimal System to classify most of its titles. In Dewey's system, numbers range from 001 to 999. It is helpful in finding your way around the library to have a general idea of what types of materials you will find under what numbers.

| 500 - 599 | Science (Mathematics, Astronomy, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geology) |
| 600 - 699 | Applied Science or Useful Arts (Medicine, Engineering, Agriculture, Home Economics, Business) |
| 700 - 799 | Fine Arts (Painting, Sculpture, Music, Photography, Sports) |
| 800 - 899 | Literature (Poetry, Plays, Essays, Criticism) |
| 900 - 999 | History (Ancient, Modern, U.S., World) |
