DEWEY DECIMAL SYSTEM

Although there are many ways of organizing books in a library, Hackney Library uses the Dewey Decimal System to classify most of its titles. In Dewey's system, numbers range from 001 to 999. It is helpful in finding your way around the library to have a general idea of what types of materials you will find under what numbers.

001 - 009 General material (encyclopedias, almanacs, computer science)
100 - 199 Philosophy, Psychology, Ethics
200 - 299 Religion (Theology, Mythology)
300 - 399 Social Sciences (Political Science, Economics, Law, Education, Social Work, Holidays, Etiquette, Folklore)
400 - 499 Language (Dictionaries, Books about Foreign Languages, Language Study, Manual language for the deaf)
500 - 599 Science (Mathematics, Astronomy, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geology)
600 - 699 Applied Science or Useful Arts (Medicine, Engineering, Agriculture, Home Economics, Business)
700 - 799 Fine Arts (Painting, Sculpture, Music, Photography, Sports)
800 - 899 Literature (Poetry, Plays, Essays, Criticism)
900 - 999 History (Ancient, Modern, U.S., World)

Two Special Sections of the 900s have been reserved:

910 - 919 Geography and Travel
920 - 929 Biography
