COMPUTERS IN HACKNEY LIBRARY
Student/Public Access Computers
Three of the library's computers are located in a circle adjacent to the front entrance and may be used by any patron of the library, as explained below:
- Barton students, faculty, and staff may use their campus network logins to access these computers.
- Other users already identified through registration (as alumni, Friends of Hackney Library, and international baccalaureate students) must present their cards to be logged on by reference staff. Alumni and IB students are allotted one hour per day of computer access; Friends of Hackney Library members are allotted two hours per day of computer access.
- Note: Computer use by these patrons is possible only if the computers are not in use by Barton students at the time of the request for use--Barton students' use takes first priority;
- Therefore, there is no guarantee that computers will be available at any given time for these patrons.
- Users without library registration must present a valid picture ID and register on a list at the reference desk with their name, address, time, and date logged on the computer. (This registration information is kept confidential, although it is subject to the United States Patriot Act.) These users are allotted one hour per day of computer access.

- Users under the age of 18 searching Internet sites other than through the library web page are asked to be in the company of their parent or guardian.
-
Black and White Printing charges from these computers are .10 cents per page (except for students, whose charges are deducted from their semester's print quota--100 free sheets of paper per semester.)
- Printouts from these computers must be picked up at the circulation desk.
- Students must show their ID upon pick-up.
- All other users must pay .10 cents per page at the circulation desk upon pick-up.
-
Color Printing charges from these computers for color copies are .25 cents per page (except for students, whose charges are deducted from their semester's print quota--100 free sheets of paper per semester.) Please note that if you send a print job to the color printer, regardless of whether it is black/white or color, it will still cost .25 cents per page.

Lab Computers
There are additional computers located throughout the library which are similar to the computers in the campus computer labs. They may be used for chat, email, Internet access, and word processing and other programs by Barton students. These computers are limited to Barton College faculty, staff, and students, and require a username and password to login. Their use is governed by the Information Technology Network: Acceptable Use Policy.

Printing charges for printouts from these computers are deducted from the student's print quota (100 free sheets of paper per semester) at the rate of approximately .05 cents for black/white copies and .25 cents for color copies .
Wireless Computer Network
The library has a wireless computer network that is accessible by Barton students, faculty, and staff (sorry, no non-Barton community patrons) in the following ways:
- Wireless Loaner Laptop Computers: Several loaner laptops that can access the wireless network are available to Barton faculty, staff, and students for check-out for in-library use only (they do not leave the library). Barton ID and the signing of a contract agreeing to terms of use must be signed each time the laptop is checked out. Loaner laptops may be checked out at the circulation desk.
- Personal Wireless Computers: The wireless network is also available to Barton faculty, staff, and students only who have personal laptops with wireless cards. In order to use a personal laptop on the library's wireless network, a password must be obtained from the reference librarian.
Please Note: At this time, there are no printing capabilities from the wireless network itself. Documents to be saved from the library's wireless loaner laptops must either be saved to a CD (each has a writeable CD drive) or to a USB memory device, which can then be inserted in a regular networked computer for printing. Alternatively, laptop documents to be printed may be emailed as an attachment to a valid email account and then accessed and printed from a hard-wired computer. Access is currently not available from the wireless network to individual folders on the U:drive.
