Online Images / Museums and Galleries

American Association of Museums

American Museum of Photography
A "museum without walls," providing online tours of a dozen exhibitions. Exhibitions include "The Face of Slavery and other Early Images of African Americans," "Scott Mutter: A More Perfect World," "The Daguerreotypes of Southworth and Hawes," and others.

Artcyclopedia: The Guide to Great Art on the Internet
This site allows users to locate museum-quality fine art on the Internet. Its images are compiled primarily from those available from museum web sites, from online image archives, and from other subject-specific Internet resources, and it includes images from over 2,100 art sites and links to an estimated 180,000 works by 8,200 artists. The database may be searched by artist name, title of work, or name/location of art museums.

CAMIO OCLC CAMIO

NCLIVE
This site (which stands for Catalog of Art Museum Images Online) provides rights-cleared, high-quality art images from collections of prominent museums. These images may be used for class projects, art history and studio art programs, course Web sites, lectures, presentations, and research resources.

Metropolitan Museum of Art
Scroll down to find the link to enter the site.

National Gallery of Art
Images from the Gallery's extensive collection span over 600 years of history, from the middle ages to the present day. Major categories of the site include The Collection, Exhibitions, Online Tours, Education, Programs and Events, Resources, and Gallery Shop. The collection can be accessed in two ways: touring the collection by topic; or searching the more than 100,000 objects in the Gallery's collection database.

Prints and Photographs Online Catalog
The Library of Congress's Prints & Photographs Online Catalog (PPOC) provides access to about 65% of its holdings, as well as to some images found in other units of the Library of Congress. Searchable in a variety of ways, many of the catalog records are accompanied by digital images--about one million digital images in all. Viewers may download images (as well as order copies of photographs), but many images are still under copyright, so it is the researcher's obligation to determine and satisfy copyright or other use restrictions when publishing or otherwise distributing materials found in the Library's collections.

Smithsonian Institution
Provides links to its online collections, among other things.

WebMuseum: Famous Paintings Exhibition
WebMuseum is a collaborative effort to bring artistic images to the internet. Includes an art index, themes index, and glossary.
